Most of all, Closs talked about the Constitution. “I learned about how he got elected president because he was a big leader and friendly and he was trusted by everybody,” said fifth-grader Delaney Davis, 10. He made students laugh with a story about how a young Washington, applying mathematics to make a lever out of a log, tipped over an outhouse while his father was inside. He lectured about self-discipline by letting a student hold his sword in a fencing stance. He explained manners using a dance popular in the 1700s. Since Constitution Day has its origins in civics lessons, Closs taught students how Washington’s parents instilled in their son manners, trust and discipline, and how those life lessons led to his fear of concentrated government power and politics. “It’s just trying to teach something I know isn’t being done in most schools.” “It’s more of a ministry,” Closs said before going on stage.
